Review of Shreya Ghoshal's Daas (2005)

Cast: Jeyam Ravi, Renuka Menon, Vadivelu, Monika Director: Babu Yogeswaran Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja Yuvan Shankar Raja has scored six numbers for "Daas". He comes up with memorable melodies in the film. 1. Yennoda Raasi (Venkat Prabhu) Music-director Gangai Amaran's son Venkat Prabhu has proved that he is a good singer. This song is purely a 'dappanguthu'. 2. Saami Kittay (Hariharan, Shreya Ghoshal) Shreya Ghosal, though a singer from North India has got her Tamil pronunciation right thereby keeping the song intact. She is accompanied by Hariharan and both mesmerize the listeners with their melodious voice. This song is a soft song with minimal orchestration. 3. Nee Enthan (Karthik) This song is peppy and has a western tune. Karthik does give his best; however, it does give a feeling of 'oft-heard-before'. 4. Shaheeba Shaheeba (Hariharan, Sujatha) Hariharan joins Sujatha for this westernized slow number. The complex orchestration does not suit the lyrics and the song comes a cropper. 5. Vaa Vaa (Shankar Mahadevan, Mahalakshmi Iyer) This is a typical 'ganaa' number sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Mahalakshmi Iyer. Not only the tune but also the rhythm and lyrics at few places remind one of an old song. 6. Sakka Podu (Kay Kay, Sadhana Sargam) This is a typical rural song. Sadhana Sargam's voice adds enery to the song. Thavil and Dollakku are used very effectively to the maximum.
